João Fernandes Beach is Búzios’s main diving hub — and one of the best dive sites on the Rio de Janeiro coastline. With visibility reaching up to 15 metres on calm days, the bay floor reveals a rich underwater world of colourful tropical fish, octopuses, lobsters, sea turtles and living corals.
What You’ll Find Underwater
The area shelters diverse marine environments just metres from shore. The rocky formations of Laje dos Três Irmãos, reachable by speedboat, are the highlight for certified divers: granite boulders covered in algae, sponges and corals, home to moray eels, octopuses and schools of reef fish. Closer to the beach, the sandy bottom with scattered rocks is perfect for a discover scuba dive — a beginner’s first experience at around 5 metres depth.
Discover Scuba vs. Certified Dive
The discover scuba dive (batismo) is ideal for those who have never dived with a tank before. After a 20-minute safety briefing, an instructor accompanies the student individually on a 40-minute immersion to up to 8 metres. Prices range from R$ 120 to R$ 200 per person.
For PADI-certified or equivalent divers, packages include tank, regulator, BCD and an underwater guide, with dives to up to 20 metres at more distant sites. These packages cost between R$ 200 and R$ 350 per person and include boat transport to the dive sites.
PADI Courses in Búzios
Búzios Dive offers the complete Open Water Diver course (theory + 5 dives), perfect for those who want to leave Búzios with their diver certification. The course spans 2 to 3 days and can begin any day of the week during the season. The certification is internationally recognised and opens doors to diving anywhere in the world.
Best Time to Dive
Visibility is best between March and October, when the sea is calmer and summer rains do not carry sediment into the water. In December and January the water may be cloudier after heavy rain, but the warmth and abundant marine life more than compensate. Arrive early to secure your slot, especially on high-season weekends.
Getting to the Dive Site
Búzios Dive is located on the João Fernandes waterfront and has its own boat to ferry divers to the more distant spots. The meeting point is directly on the beach, making access easy. Paid parking is less than a 5-minute walk away.
