Praia das Caravelas - Armação dos Búzios, RJ, 28950-000, Brazil

About

Caravelas Beach is one of the most untouched and secluded beaches in Búzios, located about 10 km from the town center within an environmental protection area. With white sand, open-ocean exposure and almost no urban development, it’s perfect for travelers seeking raw nature, silence and wide open landscapes.

Natural setting

Facing the open Atlantic, Caravelas has cooler water temperatures compared to many inner-bay beaches in Búzios, influenced by regional ocean currents. The scenery features dunes, native vegetation and a strong sense of isolation, even during peak season.

Sea conditions & activities

  • Surfing: possible on days with consistent swell.
  • Fishing: traditional small-scale fishing still occurs.
  • Long walks: wide, firm sand ideal for walking.
  • Nature photography: dramatic, undeveloped coastline.

Trails & surroundings

The area connects to natural coastal routes and hills such as Morro do Vigia. Some long-distance coastal hikes link parts of Búzios and Cabo Frio, but these routes are not officially marked and require experience and preparation.

Access

Access is mainly by car, via Estrada da Rasa toward the Cabo Frio boundary. There is no direct public transport to the sand, which helps keep the beach quiet and uncrowded.

Facilities

Caravelas has no permanent infrastructure: no beach bars, restrooms or rental services. Visitors should bring water, food, sun protection and everything needed for the day.

Best time & tips

  • Mornings and late afternoons offer better temperatures and light.
  • Summer brings variable sea conditions; always check before swimming.
  • Fall and winter are better for surf.
  • Not ideal for small children due to currents and open sea.
